Creative Self-Care Club

A monthly, drop-in writing workshop in Hamilton

As I continue down this path of being a writer and also a human, I’m reminded frequently just how important creative self-care can be. That’s why I’ve started Creative Self-Care Club, a monthly workshop in Hamilton that’s devoted to helping each other tackle the shadow side of creativity: anxiety, jealousy, writer’s block, fear. We’ll drink tea. We’ll talk. We’ll do a bit of writing. Most importantly, we’ll form a secure home base for you as you continue along your creative adventures: a place where you can rest, enjoy the company of other writers and charge your creative batteries before setting out on the next leg of your journey. You can register through CITADEL.

Creative brilliance doesn't come from nowhere.

While it may feel like that poem or short story emerged from the ether, it actually came from a well deep inside of you... a well that may be in need of filling up.

We often hear about the importance of making time for writing, and of course, that's important. But if you're not taking care of yourself, the words just won't come -- no matter how fancy your pen is or how early you get up in the morning.

That's where this workshop comes in. Over the course of three hours, we'll talk about ways we can nurture our creative selves when we're away from the page, so that when we're ready to write, the words will be there. Plus, we'll do fun writing prompts, laugh a ton, eat all the snacks and drink all the tea.

You’ll come away from this workshop with:

  • A creative self-care plan you can implement right away.

  • Meaningful connections with a friendly and supportive group of writers.

  • Pages of fresh, new writing.

  • A nourished inner artist and a rekindled romance with your personal writing practice.

This workshop is appropriate for writers of all genres and experience levels, from bestselling mystery novelists to napkin poetry scribblers. You'll have the freedom to write whatever you please -- grocery lists and manifestos are always welcome.

Love letters from past workshop participants:

“I don’t often get a chance to write — life finds a way of stopping creative juices from flowing. Listening to other writers, stories and perspectives truly helped me to start again and get back on track with a hobby that I love. Thank you!”

— Heather

“I loved the positive feedback and the sharing of stories. I felt so inspired and ready to write. The prompts were very helpful and I amazed myself at what they led me to create. ”

— Lori

“Today has been a beacon of light in the snowy, rainy semi-darkness. I feel reinvigorated and encouraged, and so lucky to have had the chance to spend the day this way.”

— Vanessa
