Urban Writing Retreat - Apr. 22 2017

from 145.00

A full-day creative writing retreat dedicated to helping you relax, recharge and reconnect with your writing practice. This is a time to check in with your creative self and tend to the writing project that's been occupying your mind. You'll get a ton of writing done and meet like-minded writers. Plus, you get lunch. What could be better?

This workshop already took place!

It's tough to make time to write. No matter what's going on in your life, it can seem as if something is always stopping you from investing the time you need to get that writing project off the ground. The Urban Writing Retreat is designed to be a step away from your everyday life, so you can breathe, relax, and check in with your creative self.

You'll come away from this workshop with:

  • Pages and pages (and pages!) of fresh, new writing.
  • Meaningful connections with a friendly and supportive group of writers.
  • A rekindled romance with your personal writing practice, and a newly lit creative spark.
  • Take-home prompts and story starters to keep the magic going.

This workshop is appropriate for writers of all genres and experience levels, from bestselling mystery novelists to napkin poetry scribblers. You'll have the freedom to write whatever you please -- grocery lists and manifestos are always welcome.

Love letters from past participants:

This sanctuary was just that — a warm and safe space to create and share... Jaclyn is welcoming and kind, and creates a beautiful energy with her positivity. I will come back to the sanctuary time and time again!
— Chelsey P.
I don’t often get a chance to write — life finds a way of stopping creative juices from flowing. Listening to other writers, stories and perspectives truly helped me to start again and get back on track with a hobby that I love. Thank you!
— Heather C.
I loved the positive feedback and the sharing of stories. I felt so inspired and ready to write. The prompts were very helpful and I amazed myself at what they led me to create.
— Lori W.
Today has been a beacon of light in the snowy, rainy semi-darkness. I feel reinvigorated and encouraged, and so lucky to have had the chance to spend the day this way.
— Vanessa D.

The schedule:

10:00 - 10:15: Introductions, tea and cookies.

10:15 - 1:00: The guided portion of the workshop, with short writes to creative prompts followed by (totally not scary!) sharing.

1:00 - 1:30: Delicious catered lunch from Delica Kitchen.

1:30 - 3:00: Quiet writing time! We'll get comfy and work on our writing projects. If you don't have a specific project on the go, Jaclyn will be happy to provide you with a prompt.

3:00 - 4:00: Our final sharing session. We'll read short excerpts of the work we've done over the course of the afternoon and provide positive, encouraging feedback to one another.

Please note that this is a Certified Introvert-Friendly Workshop™ (if only there were such an official designation!) That means lots of breaks, choice of seating, and you're welcome to come and go as you please if you need a quick walk around the block to clear your head.

The model of a one-day writing retreat at the intersection of community and silence was originally developed by my wonderful AWA teacher, Sue Reynolds. You can check out her Writer's Sanctuaries here - they take place in Uplands, Ontario.
